Weeknight Dinner: Amazing Grilled Cheese

Grilled cheese sandwich is a favorite of many. With layers of smooth melted cheese between two slices of bread it’s a great weeknight meal with little prep time or fuss. Pair a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup or a garden salad for a full meal.

Try one of these three recipes (each recipe makes 1 serving) and be sure to check out my pro cooking tips below.

Traditional Grilled Cheese SandwichTraditional Grilled Cheese

Butter one side of 2 pieces of toast. Place the butter side down in a pan and brown on medium heat.

As the toast is browning add a slice of cheddar cheese to each piece of toast.

When the buttered side is almost golden / light brown in color close the sandwich by flipping one piece of toast on top of the other so the cheese sides are together. Continue melting the cheese for 2 minutes. Using a spatula lift the sandwich out of the frying pan and serve.

Try a Grilled Cheese Sandwich with PearsGrilled Cheese with Pears

Peel a small pear, slice in half, carefully remove the seeds, and cut into thin slices.

As with the traditional grilled cheese butter one side of 2 slices of toast and brown butter side down on medium heat for 2 minutes.

While the toast browns, arrange a slice of cheddar cheese on each piece. When the cheese is nearly melted arrange 4-6 slices of pear on top of a toast and close the sandwich by flipping the other piece on top. Continue melting the cheese for 2 minutes, and serve!

Try a Southwest Grilled Cheese Sandwich with bell peppersSouthwest Grilled Cheese

This grilled cheese variation comes in either mild or spicy – pick whichever you prefer!

Butter one side of 2 pieces of toast. Place the butter side down in a pan and brown on medium heat.

Mild:

Wash a bell pepper under cold running water. Remove the stem and slice it into vertical pieces. Top your browning toasts with 2 pieces of cheddar cheese and 5-7 thinly sliced pieces of bell pepper. Continue melting the cheese for 2 minutes, then flip one piece on top of the other to close the sandwich. Serve hot and enjoy!

Spicy:

While the toast browns place a slice of cheddar on one toast and a slice of pepper jack on the other.  Once the toast is almost golden on the buttered side close the sandwich by flipping one piece of toast on top of the other so the cheese sides are together. Continue melting the cheese for 2 minutes, and serve.

Pro Tips

  • Buttering and browning one side of toast gives a beautiful and crispy grilled cheese crust. This is the secret to a delicious grilled cheese sandwich.
  • The goal is to brown the butter pieces until they are golden to light brown. Keep an eye on the toast as it’s browning to avoid dark brown to charcoal black toast. Lift up the pieces every now and then, flip the closed sandwich while melting the cheese or lower the temperature to avoid burnt toast.
  • If you use thicker slices of toast it will take longer for the cheese inside to melt. Using thinner slices helps the cheese melt quicker.
  • A rule of thumb is 2 pieces of cheese per sandwich but if you love extra cheese, add more and cook until melted.
  • Mix different cheeses together. Try cheddar and Havarti, or provolone.
  • Use multigrain or whole wheat bread/toast to add extra fiber, vitamins, and minerals to your meal.

Was hälst du von Toast Hawaii? Aus meiner Erfahrung geht es noch schneller und die notwendige Dose Ananas hat man als Toast Hawaii Liebhaber immer im Vorrat.
